Winnipeg Jets Suffer 3-2 Shootout Loss to Canadiens, Road Trip Ends
UPDATE: The Winnipeg Jets concluded their road trip with a 3-2 shootout loss against the Montreal Canadiens on October 25, 2023. This setback marks the Jets’ sixth consecutive game without a victory, extending their record to 1-5-1 since star goaltender Connor Hellebuyck was placed on injured reserve.
Despite the loss, the Jets managed to earn a point, but goaltending issues continue to haunt the struggling team. In a game filled with ups and downs, Eric Comrie delivered a commendable performance, making 29 saves to keep his team competitive.
The action heated up in the first period when the Jets took an early lead, thanks to Mark Scheifele, who scored his 14th goal of the season at the 18:35 mark. With the play initiated by Kyle Connor, Scheifele capitalized on an open opportunity in the slot, putting Winnipeg ahead temporarily.
However, the Canadiens struck back midway through the second period during their first power play, with Juraj Slafkovsky netting a one-timer to equalize. Just moments later, the Jets regained the lead with another goal from Kyle Connor, who fired a shot off the post and in after a chaotic net-front scramble.
The excitement didn’t last long, as Oliver Kapanen leveled the score for Montreal less than two minutes later, making it 2-2 before the end of the second period. The teams remained locked in a tense battle through the third, with neither able to break the deadlock, despite the Jets earning their first power play opportunity of the night.
Overtime brought a flurry of chances, but it was the Canadiens who had the upper hand, outshooting the Jets 5-1 in the extra frame. Comrie’s stellar saves kept Winnipeg alive, but the game ultimately went to a shootout after a scoreless overtime period.
In the shootout, Cole Caufield scored for Montreal, sealing the deal as the only player to find the net. The Jets’ attempts by Connor, Scheifele, and Gabriel Vilardi all fell short, with Vilardi’s shot hitting the crossbar to end the game.
The Jets now return home after a disappointing 1-3-1 road trip and will face the Buffalo Sabres on October 27, 2023. Pregame coverage starts at 4 p.m. with the puck dropping at 6 p.m. on 680 CJOB.
Fans are left wondering if the Jets can turn their fortunes around as they head into this critical matchup, with pressure mounting for the team to find their rhythm.
