CFKR Honors Tony Bourke with 2025 Community Volunteer Award
In a celebration of community spirit, the Community Foundation of the Kootenay Rockies (CFKR) has awarded the 2025 Knights of Pythias Community Volunteer Award to Tony Bourke. This recognition coincides with Giving Tuesday, a global day dedicated to charitable giving following the shopping frenzy of Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
CFKR Executive Director Lynnette Wray emphasized the importance of this day, stating, “Giving Tuesday is a special day to encourage and recognize generosity and charitable giving around the world.” Wray further noted, “The Community Foundation of the Kootenay Rockies celebrates Giving Tuesday by recognizing an unsung hero who generously volunteers their time and energy in a quiet, dedicated, and selfless manner. Tony is an inspiring community volunteer who exemplifies the meaning of this award.”
Dedication to Community Service
Tony Bourke has been a dedicated volunteer since 2011, when he began his work with the Cranbrook Food Bank. He dedicates four days a week to managing “Tony’s Bread Shed,” where he weighs and records incoming food donations, playing a crucial role in the organization’s operations.
In addition to his work at the food bank, Bourke has also contributed significantly to the Cranbrook Hospital Auxiliary, where he sorts donations at the thrift store and assists patients and visitors. His commitment to community service expanded five years ago when he joined the volunteer team at the Key City Theatre.
As the recipient of the CFKR’s Community Volunteer Award, Bourke has chosen to designate the accompanying $750 donation to KidSport Cranbrook, an organization that helps local children and youth cover the costs of participating in sports.
Community Impact and Recognition
Julie Rose, Executive Director of the Cranbrook Food Bank Society and Bourke’s nominator, expressed her admiration for him, stating, “Tony is more than a volunteer; he’s part of the fabric of our community. His grit, perseverance, and lifelong commitment to serving others inspire everyone who has the privilege of knowing him.”
Rose highlighted Bourke’s influence, saying, “He embodies the value of staying active, engaged, and connected to one’s community, and stands as a role model for what it means to live a life of purpose and kindness. Cranbrook is better because of him, and he is genuinely deserving of this recognition.”
CFKR administers the Knights of Pythias endowment fund, which annually recognizes a community volunteer. Previous award recipients have included notable figures such as:
- Laura Kennedy (2024) for her dedication to multiple community groups and youth programs.
- Mike LeClair (2023) for his role in establishing the Therapeutic Paws of Canada chapter in Cranbrook.
- Nancy Banks (2022) for her over 25 years of service to the Christmas Wrap table, benefiting the Canadian Cancer Society.
- Jim Nicol (2021) for his leadership in the Cranbrook Community Forest Society.
- Colin Campbell (2020) posthumously acknowledged for his community contributions.
- Jean-Ann Debreceni (2018) for her extensive service in various local organizations.

- Robert Williams (2016) for his work with the ʔaq̓am and Ktunaxa Nation.
- Gord Johnston (2015) for his contributions to the Cranbrook Boys’ and Girls’ Club.
The CFKR continues to play a pivotal role in recognizing and supporting the efforts of individuals dedicated to improving their communities, ensuring that the spirit of volunteerism thrives in the Kootenay Rockies.
Tony Bourke stands as a testament to the profound impact that community volunteers can have, inspiring others through his selfless dedication and commitment to service.
