College of the Rockies Launches Gasfitter Class B Level 2 Program
The College of the Rockies (COTR) is set to enhance its trades training offerings by introducing the Gasfitter Class B Level 2 program, starting in January 2026. This initiative aims to provide specialized training in the Kootenay region, addressing the ongoing employment demand for gasfitters across British Columbia.
Ranjan Bhattacharya, Dean of Trades and Technology at COTR, highlighted the significance of this program. “In January 2025, Gasfitter – Class B became a Red Seal trade in B.C. This means individuals entering the field will require both a Certificate of Qualification with a Red Seal endorsement from SkilledTradesBC and a Certificate of Qualification from Technical Safety BC,” he stated.
The Gasfitter Class B program focuses on the design, installation, repair, and maintenance of propane and natural gas systems in various environments, including residential, commercial, and industrial settings. This trade is particularly suited for individuals who possess strong mathematical skills, the ability to maintain composure under pressure, and a commitment to safety and precision.
Program Details and Eligibility
COTR’s Gasfitter Class B Level 2 program includes ten weeks of technical training, which prepares students to take the Technical Safety BC Certificate of Qualification exam. For those who have completed the provincial Plumber Apprenticeship program, either at COTR or another institution, there is an opportunity to receive credit for 1,500 of the required 3,000 workplace hours. Additionally, these students will also gain credit for Level 1 of the Gasfitter Class B technical training.
Learners who have successfully completed Gasfitter Class B Level 1 will also be eligible to enroll in the Level 2 program when it commences in January. The program offers an excellent career pathway for tradespeople, particularly those looking to expand their skills in plumbing or HVAC training, ensuring steady employment opportunities across various sectors.
Applications for the Gasfitter Class B Level 2 program are currently open. Interested individuals can find more information by visiting the COTR website at cotr.bc.ca/gasfitter.
This new program underscores COTR’s commitment to addressing the skills gap in the trades sector while providing valuable training that aligns with industry standards. The introduction of this program not only enhances the educational offerings in the Kootenay region but also supports the broader economic landscape by preparing skilled workers for vital roles in gas fitting.
