Kainoa Ancog Wins Athlete of the Week with Stellar Performance
Johnsburg senior Kainoa Ancog has been named the Northwest Herald Athlete of the Week following his impressive victory at the Vernon Hills Cougar Thanksgiving Invite. Ancog secured the 157-pound championship on Saturday, contributing significantly to the Skyhawks’ performance, which culminated in a runner-up finish in the team standings.
This recognition came through an online vote, where Ancog triumphed over other talented nominees including Janiah Slaughter from Huntley wrestling, Adam Anwar of McHenry basketball, and Malachi Bell from Jacobs basketball. In a recent interview, Ancog shared insights about his wrestling journey, personal interests, and aspirations for the season.
Personal Insights and Wrestling Journey
When asked about something that people might not know about him, Ancog highlighted his faith, stating, “I’m a devoted Christian, and my faith is an important part of who I am.” He credited his parents as his biggest supporters and acknowledged Coach JD Sylvanus for his unwavering guidance both on and off the wrestling mats.
In terms of future aspirations, Ancog expressed a desire to hike the beautiful Dolomites in Italy. Outside of wrestling, he enjoys a range of hobbies, including playing the guitar, snowboarding, running, and hiking. His favorite class is pottery, reflecting a creative side that complements his athletic pursuits.
Goals for the Season and Beyond
As the wrestling season progresses, Ancog has set ambitious goals for himself. He aims to finish the season with a win rate exceeding 0.850 and is focused on preparing his team for the dual team state series. “Most of all, I want to leave it all on the mat and make my last season one to remember,” he stated.
Ancog also shared his culinary preferences, revealing a fondness for Chipotle and a specific order: a burrito bowl with double white rice, double black beans, steak, double corn, green salsa, lettuce, sour cream, and guacamole. His favorite mobile app is Instagram, illustrating his engagement with friends and activities beyond the wrestling world.
In a playful moment, Ancog noted that his biggest pet peeve is “slow walkers in the hallway,” and he dreams of enjoying a meal with Jesus at Texas de Brazil.
As he continues his journey in wrestling, Kainoa Ancog’s commitment to excellence both on and off the mat is evident. With his strong support system and clear goals, he is poised to make a lasting impact this season.
