Hastings Racecourse Ends Live Horse Racing Events Immediately
BREAKING: Hastings Racecourse and Casino has announced an immediate halt to all live thoroughbred horse racing events, effective today. The decision comes as the venue, located in East Vancouver, revealed that no horses are currently stabled at the facility, which typically hosts races from April to October.
In a statement released just moments ago, Wayne Odegard, regional vice-president of Great Canadian Entertainment, confirmed that this drastic move is a “strictly business decision” driven by a lack of economic feasibility for the upcoming season. Odegard expressed the emotional weight of the decision, stating, “This was an extremely difficult decision, especially given the historical legacy of Hastings Racecourse in the local community and its importance to the province’s racing industry.”
The impact of this decision ripples through the community as Hastings Racecourse has been a staple for racing enthusiasts. Odegard emphasized that the focus will now shift to supporting the affected team members and racing participants as they navigate their futures in the provincial racing landscape.
Despite the cessation of live racing, casino operations and simulcast racebooks will continue unaffected. This news arrives amidst ongoing discussions about the ethics of horse racing, with the Vancouver Humane Society advocating for the abolition of the sport. The organization has highlighted the serious injuries horses have endured during races, including four deaths at Hastings last year—three during races and one during training.
As this situation unfolds, industry stakeholders are urged to evaluate alternative options for thoroughbred racing in the province. The community’s response will be crucial in shaping the future of equestrian events in British Columbia.
