High River Celebrates 40th Santa Claus Parade Amid Netflix Filming
The annual Santa Claus Parade in High River took on a cinematic flair on December 1, 2023, as Netflix filmed scenes for its upcoming holiday film, The Bodyguard. The streets were lined with enthusiastic spectators, many of whom braved the falling snow to partake in the festive atmosphere. This year marked the 40th anniversary of the parade, a beloved tradition that began in 1985 when a local man organized a small event for his wife, who had a passion for Christmas.
The parade featured a vibrant array of floats, including one showcasing the star-studded cast of The Bodyguard, which includes notable names such as Leighton Meester, Jared Padalecki, Andie MacDowell, and WWE superstar C.M. Punk. Directed by Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum, the film is set to blend holiday cheer with an engaging storyline, making the parade an ideal backdrop for filming.
As the parade progressed, community spirit was palpable. Attendees enjoyed a festive atmosphere complete with dozens of floats, firepits, and complimentary food and drinks. The event culminated with the arrival of Santa Claus, much to the delight of children and adults alike. “The Santa Claus Parade is the best event in High River,” said local resident Joyce Barton. “You just have to experience it to experience joy.”
The involvement of Netflix in the parade highlights the intersection of community traditions and the entertainment industry. With its focus on creating heartwarming holiday stories, the company has tapped into the charm of High River, showcasing the town’s rich festive culture. The collaboration not only brings visibility to the town but also creates excitement among residents who take pride in their long-standing holiday celebrations.
As High River continues to grow and evolve, the Santa Claus Parade remains a cherished event that captures the essence of community and holiday spirit. The melding of this local tradition with a major film production is a testament to the town’s allure and the universal appeal of festive celebrations.
