Filipino Billiards Community Flourishes in Winnipeg’s Pool Halls
In Winnipeg, the Filipino billiards community is thriving, with players actively engaging in tournaments and events that celebrate their passion for the game. Marvin Quiambao, a dedicated billiards enthusiast, highlighted the significance of this pastime, stating, “The game of billiards is very important to the Filipino community. It’s equivalent to hockey here in Canada.” This cultural connection has inspired Quiambao to establish a Facebook group aimed at uniting Filipino players in Winnipeg.
Billiards, encompassing various cue sports, enjoys immense popularity in the Philippines. The country has produced exceptional talents such as world champion Efren Reyes, and now, Filipino players in Winnipeg are bringing that national pride to Manitoba. Recently, a tournament organized by Quiambao attracted significant interest, with 40 players signing up within a short time. “You know that it’s thriving when you’re able to just put a post up for a tournament, and everybody shows up and it’s filled within an hour,” he remarked.
Community Building Through Billiards
Elison Brotonel Duque Jr., a participant in these events, expressed his dedication to the billiards community, saying, “The Filipino billiards community is very important to me. I’ve been playing pool for 13 years, and whenever I play pool, I feel alive.” This shared enthusiasm is fostering connections among players and creating a vibrant social scene centered around the game.
The impact of this community extends beyond just recreational play. A group of students from the Create program at Sisler High School recently produced a short documentary showcasing Winnipeg’s Filipino billiards scene. This initiative, part of CBC Manitoba’s Project POV, allows students to collaborate with journalists in creating compelling narratives. The students involved include Blake Paguio, Tareq Barhoumeh, Luke Tenorio, and Lukas LaForte, each bringing their unique perspectives and creativity to the project.
Paguio, a Filipino Canadian, has a deep-rooted passion for sports and visual storytelling. His background in sports videography complements his interest in capturing the dynamic nature of billiards. Barhoumeh, who has a fondness for visual storytelling, hopes to pursue a career in cinematography. Tenorio, a budding filmmaker, eagerly embraces the opportunity to transform his daydreams into visual narratives. LaForte’s diverse interests in music and visual arts contribute to the rich tapestry of storytelling within the group.
Celebrating Cultural Heritage
These efforts highlight the importance of community and cultural heritage within Winnipeg’s Filipino population. Billiards serves as more than just a game; it acts as a bridge that connects players and fosters relationships. The growing participation in tournaments and events underscores the vitality of this community, which continues to celebrate its roots while integrating into the broader Canadian landscape.
The Create program at Sisler High School aims to equip students with skills in various creative fields, including animation, film, and digital media. By collaborating with professional journalists, students gain hands-on experience while enriching their understanding of storytelling.
As the Filipino billiards community in Winnipeg continues to flourish, it not only enhances local culture but also nurtures bonds among its members. The passion for billiards reflects a deep-seated pride in heritage, providing a space where individuals can come together to celebrate their love for the game and each other.
