URGENT UPDATE: Air Transat will begin suspending all flights on Monday, October 30, 2023, as the airline’s pilots prepare to strike. The Air Line Pilots Association, representing 750 pilots, has confirmed a strike will commence on Wednesday, November 1, 2023, following a staggering 99 percent vote in favor among its members last week.

The airline’s announcement on Sunday has raised immediate concerns for travelers, as negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement have been ongoing since January 2023. In a statement, Air Transat expressed understanding of the uncertainty this situation brings, stating, “Negotiations are ongoing, and our goal remains to reach an agreement so we can maintain our flights as much as possible and minimize disruptions for you.”

The pilots are advocating for essential improvements, citing demands for job security, better working conditions, higher compensation, and an improved quality of life. Union representative Bradley Small emphasized, “We are unified, resolute, and have earned a contract that reflects today’s industry standards, not the standards from 2015.”

As the situation develops, questions arise regarding possible government intervention. Federal Jobs Minister Patty Hajdu acknowledged the ongoing mediation efforts but refrained from commenting on potential government actions, stating, “What I know is, the best deals are the ones that the parties arrive at together.”

Travelers are urged to stay informed as this situation evolves. The impact of the impending strike could disrupt holiday travel plans for many, creating a ripple effect across the aviation industry. More information will be provided as it becomes available.
