The Kativik School Board has appointed a new commissioner to represent Puvirnituq. On December 2, 2023, Muncy Novalinga was sworn in as a member of Kativik Ilisarniliriniq’s council of commissioners, the board confirmed in a recent announcement. This council serves as the governing body of the school board, comprising 14 public representatives—one from each community in Nunavik—who serve three-year terms.

Novalinga’s appointment follows an election in Puvirnituq, where he was acclaimed to the position, succeeding Theresa Etok, who resigned. This change marks a significant transition for the community, as Novalinga takes on the responsibilities of representing Puvirnituq within the council.

Role of Kativik Ilisarniliriniq

Kativik Ilisarniliriniq plays a vital role in providing educational services to residents across Nunavik. The school board operates 18 primary and secondary schools, along with six adult education centres. Education is delivered primarily in Inuktitut, with French and English offered as second languages, ensuring that the curriculum is accessible to a diverse student population.

The council of commissioners is responsible for overseeing the educational framework and policies that guide the board’s operations. As a new member, Novalinga will contribute to discussions and decisions that impact local education. His experience and insights from Puvirnituq will be integral to shaping the future of education in the region.

With a growing focus on community representation, Novalinga’s leadership is expected to foster communication between the school board and residents. His role will be crucial in addressing the unique challenges faced by students and families in Puvirnituq, enhancing the educational landscape in Nunavik.

As the Kativik School Board moves forward, Novalinga’s appointment reflects its commitment to effective governance and community engagement. The changes within the council signal a continued investment in improving educational opportunities for all Nunavik residents, ultimately aiming for a more inclusive and supportive learning environment.
