UPDATE: An Alberta clipper is unleashing a powerful snowstorm across southwestern Manitoba, with forecasts predicting up to 20 centimetres of snow today. The Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) warns that hazardous conditions will impact travel and visibility throughout the region.

The storm is already affecting roadways, with closures reported. The Trans-Canada Highway was closed west of Virden for over an hour yesterday due to severe snow conditions. Meteorologist Natalie Hasell emphasized the urgent need for residents to prepare for potential disruptions, saying, “Visibility could be reduced to near zero suddenly at times.”

Residents of Brandon can expect around 15 centimetres of snow, while areas in the Parkland region may see the heaviest accumulation. As the snow continues through today and into Wednesday morning, authorities are advising people to stay updated on road conditions and avoid unnecessary travel.

A yellow storm watch is currently active, indicating the potential for dangerous weather that could lead to disruptions and health risks. Emergency preparedness is crucial; authorities recommend having an emergency kit ready in vehicles and homes. Essentials include a blanket, warm clothing, food, and a small shovel.

In addition to snow, some areas near the United States border may face the risk of freezing rain. The ECCC also projects significant temperature drops later in the week, with lows plunging to -29 C by Saturday.

Hasell cautioned, “Our daytime temperatures are going to be colder than what we typically see at night starting Friday.” Below-normal temperatures are expected to persist until at least December 23.

As the storm progresses, residents are urged to remain vigilant and prepared for changing conditions. Stay tuned for further updates as this developing situation unfolds.
