Eileen Higgins Makes History as Miami’s First Democratic Mayor
BREAKING: Eileen Higgins has just been elected as Miami’s first Democratic mayor in nearly 30 years. The former county commissioner secured an impressive 59% of the votes in the runoff election, decisively defeating Republican candidate Emilio Gonzalez, who garnered approximately 41% with the backing of former President Donald Trump.
In a jubilant speech at her election celebration on July 11, 2023, Higgins declared, “Miami chose a new direction… you chose competence over chaos.” Her landmark victory not only breaks a three-decade streak of Republican leadership but also makes her the first woman to hold the position in Miami’s history.
Higgins emphasized her commitment to addressing urgent issues facing the city, stating, “This victory marks the beginning of the work ahead. We will lead a city that belongs to everyone.” Her campaign focused heavily on immigration reform and affordable housing, positioning her leadership style as a stark contrast to Trump’s policies. In a recent interview, Higgins criticized Trump’s immigration enforcement as “inhumane and cruel,” vowing to collaborate with the administration on common grounds while ensuring her voice is heard on disagreements.
The election results highlight a significant trend in Miami’s political landscape, following a series of Democratic victories nationwide. Higgins replaces outgoing mayor Francis Suarez, who briefly sought the Republican presidential nomination.
Notably, Higgins received endorsements from prominent Democrats, including former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, solidifying her support base in a race that, despite being officially non-partisan, saw heightened national attention.
As Miami looks toward a new political era with Higgins at the helm, her leadership will be crucial in navigating the city’s diverse challenges. The election results serve as a pivotal moment, reflecting a broader shift in political dynamics as the nation approaches the next election cycle.
Stay tuned for more updates as Higgins begins her tenure, focusing on her promised initiatives to foster inclusivity and tackle the pressing issues of the day.
