BC Hydro Warns Public of Dangers Amid Surge in Copper Thefts
BC Hydro has issued a grave warning about the alarming rise in copper thefts, which have surged by more than 300 percent over the past 18 months. The electric utility emphasizes that these thefts not only result in significant financial losses but also pose serious safety risks. Thieves are increasingly targeting maintenance holes that contain vital copper cables, essential for transmitting electricity between underground circuits and substations.
According to a news release from BC Hydro, tampering with these cables is akin to interfering with live power lines. One misstep can lead to fatal consequences. “This isn’t just a property crime. It’s a direct threat to public safety, to our crews, and to the thieves themselves,” stated Susie Rieder, a spokesperson for BC Hydro. “Anyone who touches live electrical equipment is risking severe injury or loss of life.”
Escalating Incidents and Safety Hazards
Since the beginning of January 2024, BC Hydro has documented 24 cases of theft and vandalism related to maintenance holes, a staggering increase compared to just five cases over the previous two years, marking a rise of 380 percent. These incidents are not only dangerous for those involved but also create hazards for pedestrians and vehicles due to open maintenance holes. Severed cables can lead to power outages or even fires, compounding the risks.
BC Hydro is actively collaborating with local law enforcement to investigate these thefts, which have occurred in several locations: 11 incidents on Vancouver Island, nine in the Lower Mainland, and one in Northern B.C. Thieves typically remove maintenance hole covers and cut cables at both ends, often targeting a single span of approximately 200 metres. They then employ vehicles or winches to drag the stolen cable away.
The financial implications of these thefts are considerable, with repair costs estimated at around $1.2 million. This figure reflects the extensive damage caused not only by the thefts but also by the necessary repairs to restore service and safety.
Public Appeal for Vigilance
In light of these developments, BC Hydro urges the public to remain vigilant. The utility encourages anyone who witnesses suspicious activities related to copper theft or maintenance holes to report them immediately. Individuals can contact local authorities by calling 911 or reach out to BC Hydro’s security command centre at 1-877-311-8611.
As the situation continues to evolve, BC Hydro remains committed to ensuring public safety and minimizing the risks associated with these thefts. The utility’s proactive approach aims to mitigate the dangers posed by copper thefts while protecting essential infrastructure and the community at large.
