Dixon School Board Appoints Melydi Huyett as New Superintendent

The Dixon School Board has appointed Melydi Huyett as the new superintendent of Dixon Public Schools, following the upcoming retirement of current superintendent Margo Empen in July 2026. The board unanimously approved Huyett’s three-year contract on December 17, 2023, which will take effect on July 1, 2026.

Huyett, a Dixon native, currently serves as principal of Centennial Elementary School in Polo. In a statement, she expressed her gratitude for the opportunity, saying, “I am truly honored to be a part of and serve Dixon Public Schools. I look forward to working in partnership with our students, our staff and our community partners in order to continue to do what’s best for the students of Dixon and our community.”

With over 20 years of experience in public education, Huyett has a strong background in instructional leadership, district administration, and student-centered outcomes. During her tenure at Centennial Elementary, she has spearheaded initiatives related to math and English language arts development, state and federal grant writing, and the implementation of one-on-one technology programs.

Board President Linda Wegner praised Huyett’s character and commitment, stating, “I believe that Dr. Huyett will approach every decision with kindness and respect. Melydi is a lifelong resident of Dixon and a product of Dixon Public Schools. She sees this as an opportunity to give back to the schools, families, and community that helped shape who she is.”

Huyett’s leadership qualities have been recognized throughout her career. In 2015, she received the Award of Excellence in the administrator category from the Illinois State Board of Education as part of the Those Who Excel education awards program. She holds a doctorate in education from Aurora University and obtained her chief school business official degree from Northern Illinois University.

According to Huyett’s contract, she is required to establish residency within the district within one year of her start date. Her annual salary will be $150,000 for the 2026-2027 contract year, with a 3% increase for each subsequent year.

The school board initiated preparations for the transition in October 2024, following plans for Empen’s retirement. In December of that year, they approved an expenditure of $8,400 to the Illinois Association of School Boards for the superintendent search. The search process officially commenced in June 2025.

During the board meeting where Huyett’s appointment was discussed, Vice President Brandon Rogers emphasized the importance of intentionality during this transition period. Board Secretary Melissa Gates suggested organizing informal meet-and-greet events to facilitate introductions, though no official events have been announced yet.

The appointment of Melydi Huyett marks a significant step for Dixon Public Schools as it prepares for a new chapter in leadership and continued commitment to student success.
