Urgent: Ontario Man Faces 17th Christmas in Hospital Bed

UPDATE: Ken Retkowski, a 54-year-old man from Renfrew, Ontario, is facing yet another Christmas confined to a hospital bed after spending 17 years in the Renfrew Victoria Hospital. Despite being deemed medically stable, he remains trapped in a cycle of bureaucratic delays.

“I’m kept in here all the time to go nowhere. I’m a prisoner,” Ken stated, sharing his anguish with CTV News from his hospital room. His struggles began in January 2009 following a devastating car crash that left him with a severe brain injury, limiting the use of his right side.

Ken’s twin sister, Kareen Retkowski, expressed desperation for change. “What we’re trying to do is get Ken back out into the community where he should be,” she said. Kareen has taken proactive steps by renting an apartment in Renfrew, readying it for Ken’s accessibility needs.

However, the only barrier preventing Ken’s discharge is financial. “It costs $1,300 a day for Ken to be in the hospital,” Kareen revealed. “That’s almost $475,000 a year. He could be living in the community with the care he needs for $350,000 a year.”

Officials announced new funding plans this fall that could provide patients like Ken with up to $700 per day for high-intensity home care, enabling discharges and freeing up hospital beds. “I’m hoping to get some of that funding to invest into the community care that Ken requires,” Kareen emphasized.

Despite these potential funding solutions, documents obtained by CTV News indicate that the program’s implementation has been pushed back to 2026 due to delays caused by a severe flu strain this year. This means Ken and approximately 5,000 other patients in Ontario will spend yet another holiday season in hospital.

“In here, you might as well be dead,” Ken lamented, underscoring the emotional toll of his prolonged stay. Kareen described the situation as “detrimental,” noting that Ken’s time in the hospital is hindering his recovery.

As the calendar counts down to December, pressure mounts on Ontario’s healthcare system to expedite patient transitions from hospital to home care. The Retkowski family’s plight highlights broader issues within the healthcare framework, emphasizing the urgent need for reform.
