Jamal Murray Steps Up as Nuggets Face Four Weeks Without Jokic
UPDATE: Jamal Murray is ready to take on a heavier load for the Denver Nuggets following the injury of three-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokic, who is expected to miss at least four weeks due to a hyperextended left knee. This pivotal moment comes just as the Nuggets secured a 106-103 victory against the Toronto Raptors on January 1, 2026, before a crowd of 19,181 at Scotiabank Arena.
Murray, who scored 21 points despite a challenging shooting night, understands the critical role he must now play. “I need to play my own game, stay aggressive, stay composed, and play quickly,” he stated, emphasizing his commitment to lead the team during this challenging period.
Jokic suffered the injury in the closing moments of a recent game against the Miami Heat, leaving the Nuggets without their star player for an extended time. As a result, the spotlight now shines on Murray, who has averaged a career-high 25.2 points per game this season. Nuggets head coach Dave Adelman acknowledged the weight of the responsibility placed on Murray, saying, “Losing Nikola is losing one of the greatest players to ever live. Jamal’s responsibility right now is to keep making the right play.”
The game saw the Nuggets initially dominate, leading by as much as 13 points in the second quarter. However, the Raptors mounted a fierce comeback, narrowing the gap significantly. Murray’s resilience was crucial in the final moments, where he scored four of Denver’s last nine points to secure the win.
As Murray returns to his hometown for this critical stretch, he expressed gratitude for the opportunity to play in front of family and friends. “It’s a blessing. It’s always fun,” he remarked, fully aware of the stakes involved.
Meanwhile, the Raptors faced their own challenges despite a game-high 30 points from Brandon Ingram. His last-second three-point attempt was ruled unsuccessful after video review confirmed he released the ball just after the buzzer. Ingram reflected on the moment, saying, “I did [feel I tied the game]. Maybe I need to cut my fingernails.”
Adding to the emotional atmosphere, former Raptors center Jonas Valanciunas received a warm welcome from the crowd before the game. He recorded season-high numbers with 17 points and 9 rebounds before exiting due to a right calf strain, showcasing the human stories intertwined with the game.
As the Nuggets prepare for the upcoming weeks without Jokic, all eyes will be on Murray to see how he harnesses this newfound responsibility. The basketball world waits with bated breath to witness the unfolding drama in Denver.
