Nova Scotia Government to Construct 30 Affordable Homes in Kentville
The government of Nova Scotia has announced plans to construct new public housing in Kentville, aimed at providing affordable living options for residents. On Tuesday, the province revealed that the development will consist of 30 apartments, catering to approximately 100 individuals, including seniors and families.
The housing project will feature one and two-bedroom apartments, with ten of these units designed to be fully accessible. This initiative is part of a broader commitment by the provincial government to enhance the availability of affordable housing in the region.
Government Investment in Public Housing
John Lohr, the Minister of Finance and Treasury Board as well as the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Kings North, made the announcement on behalf of Housing Minister John White. Lohr emphasized the importance of affordable housing, stating, “When people have a comfortable and affordable home, they can focus more on their work, their family and overall quality of life.” He highlighted that this project represents the most significant investment the province has ever made in public housing.
According to a press release from the provincial government, preliminary designs for the project have been completed by Dora Construction. Additionally, the company’s sister organization, Eastcut, is currently manufacturing the modular components for the units at its facility in Nova Scotia.
Construction is set to commence in the spring of 2025, with an anticipated completion date in the summer of 2027. This effort aims to alleviate housing shortages in Kentville, providing essential support to families and seniors in need of affordable accommodation.
The introduction of these new apartments is expected to positively impact the community by creating a more stable living environment for residents, thereby enhancing their overall quality of life. The provincial government’s commitment to this project reflects a growing recognition of the need for affordable housing solutions across Nova Scotia and beyond.
As construction progresses, local officials and residents are hopeful that this initiative will serve as a model for future housing developments aimed at addressing the growing demand for affordable living spaces in the region.
