The HMCS Yellowknife, a Kingston-class coastal defence vessel based at CFB Esquimalt, has embarked on a two-month deployment in the Caribbean Sea as part of a multinational security operation aimed at countering drug trafficking. The vessel departed from Vancouver Island on September 17, 2023, to contribute to Operation CARIBBE, a U.S.-led initiative focused on disrupting illicit drug flows in the region.

According to the Department of National Defence (DND), the mission is designed to prevent illegal substances from reaching Canada and other parts of North America. The DND stated, “HMCS Yellowknife will work to lawfully disrupt the movement of illicit trafficking vessels through boarding and maritime interdiction operations, collaborating with surface assets and maritime patrol aircraft from partner nations.”

Mission Details and Historical Context

Operation CARIBBE, launched in 2006, has achieved significant success in combating drug trafficking, intercepting over 123 metric tons of cocaine to date. Last year, two Halifax-class vessels, HMCS Harry DeWolf and HMCS William Hall, collectively seized more than 2,200 kilograms of cocaine as part of the operation. This underscores Canada’s commitment to working with regional partners against the distribution of dangerous narcotics throughout the Americas.

Rear-Admiral Josée Kurtz, Commander of Maritime Forces Atlantic, emphasized the importance of this deployment, stating, “Canada’s contribution to Operation CARIBBE underscores our strong commitment to working alongside regional partners to combat the flow of dangerous narcotics.” This mission highlights Canada’s resolve to enhance security across the region while collaborating with allies to disrupt illicit networks.

Capabilities of HMCS Yellowknife

The HMCS Yellowknife is equipped for both surveillance and patrol operations, making it well-suited for its mission in the Caribbean. “The crew is proud to represent Canada on this mission and contribute to a safer maritime environment,” said Lieutenant-Commander Jeffrey Smith, the Commanding Officer of HMCS Yellowknife. He noted that the ship is prepared to coordinate closely with partner nations to detect and interdict vessels involved in illegal trafficking.

The deployment marks a significant commitment to regional security, reflecting Canada’s ongoing efforts to maintain stability in the Caribbean and beyond. As the HMCS Yellowknife engages in its mission, it joins a broader coalition working to safeguard the waters against illicit activities.
