Man Sentenced to 8 Years for Stabbing Death of Theresa Agawa
Urgent Update: In a critical development, Tyler Abbott, 25, has pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the stabbing death of Theresa Agawa on August 20, 2023, in Sault Ste. Marie. The sentencing took place on Monday afternoon, with Abbott receiving an 8-year prison sentence after initially facing a second-degree murder charge.
The incident occurred near Queen Street West, where Abbott fatally stabbed Agawa, leading to her tragic death two weeks later. Justice Michael Varpio accepted the plea deal after considering several factors presented by both the defense and the Crown, resulting in the lesser charge of manslaughter.
During the sentencing, Abbott appeared virtually from the Algoma Remand and Treatment Centre and expressed remorse for his actions. He conveyed condolences to Agawa’s family, stating he “didn’t mean to kill her.” A pathologist confirmed that the stab wound, measuring 1.5 by 0.5 centimeters, was not immediately fatal. Agawa had declined exploratory surgery initially offered by a surgeon, ultimately succumbing to her injuries approximately two weeks later.
Justice Varpio deemed the sentence appropriate considering the severity of the stabbing and its profound impact on Agawa’s family. Abbott’s sentence will be served consecutively with a 4-year aggravated assault charge from last December, compounding the seriousness of his offenses.
This case highlights the tragic consequences of violence and the profound emotional toll on victims’ families. As the community processes this devastating event, further developments in Abbott’s situation may arise, making it essential for residents to stay informed.
