Singapore Commits to Job Growth Amid AI Integration Strategy

Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has assured that Singapore will avoid “jobless growth” as the nation aims to implement artificial intelligence (AI) more thoroughly within its economy. In his concluding remarks on the Budget debate on February 26, 2024, Wong emphasized the need for economic gains derived from AI to translate into enhanced employment opportunities and improved wages for workers.

Wong addressed apprehensions expressed by Members of Parliament regarding the potential negative impact of increased AI utilization on the workforce. Concerns included the possibility of companies reducing investment in employee training, creating barriers for older workers attempting to re-enter the job market, and diminishing the availability of entry-level positions. He acknowledged that these fears arise from the perception that AI is a more disruptive force than previous technological advancements.

Government Commitment to Workforce Development

In response to these worries, Wong affirmed the government’s commitment to proactively mitigate adverse effects. “We will invest more deliberately and more systematically in our people,” he stated. As part of this strategy, the formation of a National AI Council has been announced, aimed at aligning industry transformation with workforce development. Wong reassured the public, stating, “That is our assurance, and that’s why our strategy going ahead is clear. We will not have jobless growth in Singapore.”

The Prime Minister’s remarks were supported by Ng Chee Meng, Secretary-General of the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC), who called for enhanced measures to prepare workers for an AI-driven economy. Ng highlighted three key areas for focus: equipping every worker to become AI-ready, reinforcing protections and support for employees, and enhancing NTUC’s capacity to represent professionals, managers, and engineers.

To address the issue of accessibility to training, Ng pointed out the necessity for support, particularly for those who have already utilized their SkillsFuture credits. He emphasized that all workers should have the opportunity to engage in AI-related training.

Wong’s statements and the initiatives proposed reflect Singapore’s broader ambition to harness the potential of AI while ensuring that its workforce is not left behind. As the nation navigates this transformative period, the government’s proactive approach aims to balance economic growth with the welfare of its citizens.
