Kyiv Residents Face Nightly Assaults as Drone Strikes Intensify

Kyiv is grappling with an escalating crisis as Russian drone and missile attacks intensify during nighttime hours. Residents of the Ukrainian capital find themselves forced underground for safety as these assaults become increasingly frequent and severe. In the fourth year of Russia’s full-scale invasion, reports indicate that the number of drones launched at Kyiv has reached alarming levels, sometimes exceeding 700 in a single attack. Experts warn that swarms of up to 1,000 drones could soon become commonplace.
During the day, life in Kyiv appears vibrant, with busy streets filled with people and activities. However, as night falls, the atmosphere shifts dramatically. Many residents describe the recent drone and missile strikes as the most frightening of the entire conflict. Karyna Holf, a 25-year-old resident, recounted her experience during a recent attack. “During the day, you walk around, drink coffee, smile, meet friends,” she said. “But at night, you brace for death every time you hear the sound of a Shahed drone or a missile.” She narrowly escaped injury when her apartment was severely damaged by an incoming missile.
The persistent threat of death has fostered a dark sense of humor among some residents. Danylo Kuzemskyi, 35, explained how this fear manifests in daily life. “It’s like a computer game where you try to survive and still remain functional,” he said. Despite the constant danger, many people struggle to maintain a sense of normalcy. They joke that they do not sleep naked, fearing they might need to be extricated from rubble should an attack occur.
The drone strikes, often accompanied by explosions and the sounds of air defenses, can last for hours, leaving many residents exhausted from lack of sleep. The city, shrouded in darkness, is intermittently illuminated by the flashes of air defense fire. The head of Kyiv city administration, Tymur Tkachenko, reported that since the start of 2024, more than 800 sites in Kyiv have been impacted, including over 600 residential buildings. “They are deliberately hitting apartment buildings and urban districts,” he stated. “This is their tactic — to spread fear and increase the number of civilian casualties.”
Russia maintains that its military operations target only military installations, yet numerous instances throughout the conflict demonstrate the harm inflicted upon civilian infrastructure. The ongoing assaults have fostered a sense of solidarity among Kyiv’s residents. Social media posts reveal a determination to continue with daily routines, with many proudly sharing their ability to enjoy a morning cappuccino or attend workouts despite the turmoil.
Facing a relentless atmosphere of terror, some residents have begun to adapt their behaviors. Kuzemskyi, whose apartment was destroyed in a previous strike, no longer seeks shelter during attacks, prioritizing sleep over safety. Conversely, Oleksandra Umanets, 23, finds solace in the subway shelter with her 10-month-old son, feeling safer there than at home. Each morning around 05:00 local time, she leaves the shelter with her child, relieved to see him smiling after a night spent in fear.
As Umanets prepares for another night, she reflects on the challenges of parenting amid war. “When it’s about you — that’s one thing. But when it’s about your child, for what?” she questioned, highlighting the vulnerability of children born into this conflict.
Residents like Holf, Kuzemskyi, and Umanets are not only fighting for their own survival but also for the sense of community that persists in the face of adversity. The resilience displayed by the people of Kyiv remains a testament to their unwavering spirit, even as they navigate the uncertainties of life in a war zone.
