Pope Leo XIV Calls for Compassion at Mass in Castel Gandolfo

Pope Leo XIV emphasized the need for “merciful compassion” towards the world’s marginalized during a Mass on July 16, 2023, in Castel Gandolfo, Italy. The gathering took place at St. Thomas of Villanova church, which holds significant spiritual ties to the Pope’s Augustinian order.
The Mass marked Leo’s return to the papal estate for the summer, continuing a long-standing tradition. St. Thomas of Villanova, a 16th-century figure known for his dedication to the poor and as a leader within the Augustinian order, served as an inspiration for the Pope’s message.
In his homily, Pope Leo reflected on the parable of the Good Samaritan, urging attendees to embody empathy and compassion. He stated, “How we look at others is what counts, because it shows what is in our hearts.” He highlighted the plight of those affected by tyranny, poverty, and war, calling for action and support for those in dire circumstances.
“The victims of tyrannical political systems, of an economy that forces them into poverty, and of wars that kill their dreams and their very lives” deserve our attention, Leo said. This message aligns with his ongoing focus on social justice, a theme he has woven into his papal speeches since his election.
The Rev. Tadeusz Rozmus, the priest at St. Thomas of Villanova parish, expressed joy at the Pope’s presence in Castel Gandolfo. He remarked on the historical significance of Leo, being the first Augustinian pope, and noted how it reconnects him with the roots of his spirituality. “With him (Leo) returns to the beginning of his history,” Rozmus commented.
During his two-week vacation in Castel Gandolfo, Pope Leo has already engaged in significant meetings, including an audience with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He also celebrated a Mass focusing on environmental stewardship, reflecting his commitment to various social issues.
After his initial retreat, the Pope plans to return to the Vatican at the end of July before coming back to Castel Gandolfo in August. This period of reflection and connection to his Augustinian heritage is seen as vital to his papacy.
Through these actions and messages, Pope Leo XIV continues to advocate for compassion and assistance to those in need, reinforcing the values at the heart of his religious order and his papal mission.
