Trump Joins Chelsea in Celebratory Trophy Lift at Club World Cup

President Donald Trump participated in the trophy presentation ceremony following Chelsea FC’s decisive victory over Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup final on March 17, 2024. The match, held at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, concluded with Chelsea triumphing 3-0, marking a significant achievement for the club.
Trump joined Chelsea captain Reece James and FIFA president Gianni Infantino on stage for the trophy lift. The presence of Trump was met with mixed reactions from the crowd, as a notable portion of fans booed him during the postgame ceremony. This contrasted sharply with the jubilant atmosphere surrounding Chelsea’s victory.
In a notable departure from typical presentation protocols, Trump remained on stage beside James as the trophy was lifted. After a brief exchange of words with James and Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, James hoisted the trophy while Trump stood prominently next to him. Trump clapped enthusiastically and shared a handshake and hug with Infantino as the Chelsea players celebrated the moment.
The decision for Trump to stay front and center during the trophy lift drew attention, as it deviated from the customary practice where the head of state typically steps aside for the players. For instance, during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Infantino and Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani presented the trophy to Lionel Messi, but maintained a distance during the lift itself.
Trump’s involvement at the Club World Cup has been interpreted as indicative of his relationship with FIFA and Infantino, suggesting a strategic alliance that may involve support from the U.S. government for upcoming events, including the 2026 World Cup.
The match, which marked Trump’s first and only attendance at a Club World Cup game, was secured with heightened security measures, including the presence of Secret Service agents throughout the stadium. Trump watched the game from a suite alongside Infantino and other prominent figures such as former NFL quarterback Tom Brady and media mogul Rupert Murdoch.
Prior to the U.S. national anthem, which was performed approximately ten minutes before kickoff, Trump made a brief appearance on the in-stadium video boards. Reactions from fans were mixed; while there were some cheers, the predominant response included boos and whistles. These sentiments were amplified as Trump was once again displayed on the video boards during the trophy ceremony.
Chelsea’s victory, underscored by Cole Palmer’s two goals and an assist, was celebrated by the team as they lifted the trophy multiple times against a backdrop of fireworks. Palmer later expressed surprise at Trump’s extended presence during the trophy celebration, noting, “I knew he was going to be here, but I didn’t know he was going to be on the stand where we lift the trophy so I was a bit confused.”
This event encapsulated not only a significant moment in sports but also highlighted the intertwining of politics and athletics in the modern era.
