Canadian Cities Ranked: The Top 10 Cat Lovers in 2023

Recent findings from a report by pet retailer PetSmart have highlighted the rising popularity of cats in Canada. The analysis focused on cat adoption rates and the purchasing of cat-related products, revealing the top ten cities that embrace feline companionship. Notably, cat adoptions have outpaced dog adoptions over the last few years, reflecting a significant trend in pet ownership.
Topping the list is Langley, B.C., followed closely by East York, a former municipality now part of Toronto. Other Ontario cities such as Cambridge and Nepean also made the cut, illustrating a strong preference for cats in the region. Interestingly, Toronto appears twice in the rankings, with Scarborough, another former municipality now integrated into the city, securing the eighth position.
Changing Perceptions of Cat Ownership
In a statement, Aimee Gilbreath, president of PetSmart Charities of Canada, noted the shift in societal attitudes towards cat ownership. “We’ve been following this trend as cat adoptions outpace dog adoptions — and it’s fair to say cats are having a moment,” she said. Gilbreath emphasized the importance of moving beyond stereotypes associated with cat owners, particularly the outdated image of the solitary cat lady.
The complete list of the top ten cat-loving cities in Canada is as follows:
1. Langley, B.C.
2. East York, Ont.
3. Cambridge, Ont.
4. Nepean, Ont.
5. Nanaimo, B.C.
6. Kitchener, Ont.
7. Kelowna, B.C.
8. Scarborough, Ont.
9. St. Catharines, Ont.
10. Victoria, B.C.
Summer’s Kitten Season and Adoption Efforts
According to PetSmart, the summer months mark the peak of “kitten season,” when many kittens are born. This period places additional pressure on shelters and rescue organizations, which often find themselves overwhelmed with vulnerable animals seeking loving homes. Gilbreath encourages potential pet parents to consider adopting a cat during this time. “Cats can thrive in smaller living spaces, and their independence often makes them incredibly appealing to pet parents who can’t get out for regular walks,” she explained.
As more individuals and families recognize the joys of cat companionship, the trend is likely to continue evolving. The data from PetSmart underscores a growing appreciation for cats, which could lead to increased adoption rates and a shift in how society views these beloved pets.
