Free ‘Jack & the Beanstalk’ Opera for Kids at Brandon Library

URGENT UPDATE: A free operatic performance of “Jack & the Beanstalk” will take place at the Brandon Public Library on July 25, 2023, at 11 a.m. This exciting event, presented by Manitoba Underground Opera, invites children of all ages and their families to enjoy a lively adaptation of the classic fairy tale – absolutely no charge!
This 30-minute rendition features the enchanting music of Arthur Sullivan and a creative libretto by John Davies. According to Brendan McKeen, executive director of Manitoba Underground Opera, “It’s pretty faithful to the story you know,” where Jack must navigate a world of magic beans and a towering giant.
The performance stars Jacqueline Arthur as both Mrs. Nimble and the Giant’s Wife, along with Brady Barrientos making his debut as Jack. Stephen Haiko-Pena will bring the characters of the Giant and Trouble-Man to life. The production promises to be a delightful introduction to opera for young audiences.
“The show is free, something we are proud of as a company,” McKeen said. “We believe that everyone deserves access to the arts, regardless of their financial situation.” This initiative is supported by public grants and donations from music lovers.
Families can expect an engaging atmosphere, with children encouraged to express themselves during the performance. “I keep hearing fun stories of people just being absolute maniacs, running around screaming like sugar-high little monsters,” McKeen shared. “But when the music starts, they sit completely quietly and watch the whole thing mesmerized.”
Following the show, there will be an interactive Q&A session, though many attendees are eager for photo opportunities instead. Attendees are kindly reminded to refrain from flash photography and video-recording during the performance to ensure a seamless experience for all.
Additionally, the Brandon Public Library is hosting another enriching activity—the Story Walk featuring the delightful book “Dear Street” by Lindsay Zier-Vogel. This outdoor family activity runs until July 31, allowing participants to walk along a 250-meter path starting at Crow’s General Store, 33 17th Street East, while enjoying the story page-by-page.
As wildfires pose challenges to future performances, McKeen expressed hopes to extend their reach in September. Families are encouraged to stay updated via the Manitoba Underground Opera’s website as plans unfold.
Don’t miss this unique opportunity to introduce your family to the magic of opera! To register for the free show, contact the library at [email protected] or call 204-727-6648. Join in on the fun and share your experience with the community!
