Blind B.C. Coach Calls for Greater Accessibility in Public Spaces

Sheldon Guy, a basketball coach from Langley, British Columbia, is advocating for improved accessibility in public spaces following troubling experiences that have left him feeling unsafe. Having lost his vision in 2021, Guy actively promotes awareness about the challenges faced by blind individuals in navigating their environments.
In recent months, while visiting locations such as White Rock and Surrey, Guy has encountered significant obstacles. He recalls a specific incident on White Rock Pier where he was confronted aggressively by strangers for using an accessibility mat. “I don’t wear sunglasses, but I’ve got a stick — I’m touching the guide rail of the pier,” Guy explained. He questioned the need for visible indicators of his blindness, highlighting a broader issue of public misunderstanding regarding the needs of those with visual impairments.
The challenges do not stop at misunderstanding. Guy has experienced harassment, including incidents of being spat on and physically assaulted. “Why do you think out of 100 people, 25 people that lose their vision commit suicide? This is why — we’re not accepted out there. I don’t feel safe,” he stated. His experiences underscore the urgent need for societal change and greater empathy towards individuals with disabilities.
Advocacy for Change
Despite these negative experiences, Guy remains committed to advocating for better accessibility. He has worked with several organizations, including Air Canada, BC Lions, and Ticketmaster, to improve services for visually impaired individuals. His efforts have led to enhancements such as voice-activated systems for booking flights, which now accommodate those who cannot use traditional online methods.
Guy’s advocacy has yielded tangible results. After reaching out to Air Canada about the difficulties he faced in booking flights, he was invited to Montreal to discuss accessibility improvements with company executives. His suggestions led to the implementation of a voice-activated system, allowing users to navigate the booking process more efficiently.
Additionally, Guy emphasizes the importance of communication in public spaces. “If you see me on the street, say something — that goes a long way,” he advises. He believes that simple gestures, such as informing visually impaired individuals of nearby obstacles, could significantly enhance their mobility and comfort in public areas.
Raising Awareness and Promoting Kindness
Education is a crucial aspect of Guy’s mission. He actively engages in discussions about how sighted individuals can better interact with those who are blind. He encourages people to be kind and courteous, noting that many individuals with visual impairments are hesitant to go out due to fear of mistreatment. “You don’t see a lot of blind people out, and that’s why — they’re scared to go out. I’m scared to go out,” he said.
Guy also proposes practical solutions, such as more signage in public areas to indicate accessibility features. He suggested clear markings and frequent reminders about the purpose of accessibility mats, which could help foster an environment of respect and understanding. “They should paint ‘accessibility mat’ every five feet… There should be a sign saying, ‘This mat is prioritized for mobility accessibility needs, please,’” he explained.
As he continues his advocacy work, Sheldon Guy remains hopeful that greater awareness and understanding will lead to a more inclusive society where individuals, regardless of their abilities, can feel safe and valued. Through education and compassion, he believes that communities can transform the experiences of those with disabilities, paving the way for a more accessible future.
