The Miami Dolphins have signed free agent cornerback Jack Jones following the significant injury of Artie Burns, who suffered a torn ACL during the first day of training camp. This development, confirmed by a source to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, comes in response to the team’s pressing need for depth in the cornerback position.

Burns, who has been a crucial part of the Dolphins’ defense, was placed on season-ending injured reserve on July 27, 2023. The team did not disclose specific details about his injury, but the loss of a player of his caliber creates a substantial gap in the secondary.

Jones’ Background and Previous Performance

Jones, 27, started 16 games for the Las Vegas Raiders last season, showcasing his potential with career highs in tackles (69), passes defended (16), and interceptions (3). Despite these achievements, he also faced challenges, conceding 698 yards and nine touchdowns, which resulted in a passer rating of 108.9 against him on 88 targets.

Originally drafted in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots, Jones has accumulated a total of seven interceptions, 27 passes defended, and 136 tackles over 42 games, including 21 starts. After being released by the Patriots, he was claimed off waivers by the Raiders, where he played for two seasons before his release on April 7, 2023, following unsuccessful trade attempts.

Dolphins’ Strategy and Additional Moves

The Dolphins, under head coach Mike McDaniel, have expressed confidence in their current cornerback roster but remain proactive in seeking improvements. Earlier this week, the team also signed veteran cornerback Cornell Armstrong, further bolstering their secondary in light of Burns’ injury.

As the Dolphins prepare for the upcoming season, the addition of Jones aims to enhance defensive capabilities and provide crucial support in a highly competitive league. The team will be looking to integrate him swiftly into their system as they navigate the challenges ahead.
