Stony Plain Celebrates Second Annual Gathering of Métis Heritage

A vibrant celebration of Métis culture and contributions took place in Stony Plain, Alberta, on March 30, 2024. The second annual mâmawihitowin, which means “a gathering of peoples” in Cree, was hosted at Heritage Park to emphasize the rich history of the Lac Ste. Anne Métis community.
Tracy Friedel, president of the Lac Ste. Anne Métis Community Association, expressed the importance of raising awareness about Métis history. “I think Métis history generally is not well known, and particularly when you get to specific communities like ours,” she stated. Friedel emphasized the need for greater understanding of Alberta’s unique history and the community’s significant role in shaping the province.
The celebration aimed to showcase the Lac Ste. Anne Métis community as more than just a recreational site or pilgrimage destination. “The community has been there for many decades prior to any of that,” Friedel explained.
Families enjoyed a variety of activities throughout the day, including horse and wagon rides, face painting, and games for children. For adults, the event featured an Indigenous artisan market offering traditional foods and crafts, providing an opportunity for attendees to connect with local culture.
Looking ahead, Friedel highlighted the community’s recent achievement: the award of a Federal Lands Initiative property in Stony Plain. This initiative will facilitate the development of a 52-unit multi-family housing project expected to be completed by 2027. “We’re very honoured to be able to lead those projects for the community,” she remarked, indicating a promising future for the Lac Ste. Anne Métis community.
As the celebration drew to a close, attendees left with a deeper appreciation for the Métis heritage and the community’s ongoing contributions to the cultural landscape of Alberta. The mâmawihitowin gathering stands as a vital reminder of the importance of understanding and honoring the diverse histories that shape Canada.
