UPDATE: Vancouver residents Christian Jones and Matt Braun are set to embark on a life-changing cycling journey through Iceland, having already raised over $25,000 for cancer research, surpassing their initial goal of $20,000. The duo’s expedition, named the Westfjord Charity Ride, will cover a challenging 925 kilometers through the rugged Westfjords, aiming to complete it in just eight days.

This urgent mission is deeply personal for Jones, whose wife, Hannah, was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 29 after discovering she carried the BRCA gene. Their battle with cancer has been fraught with surgeries, chemotherapy, and emotional strain, especially after Hannah’s sister, Bethany, also received a breast cancer diagnosis. Fuelled by their resolve, both women have emerged cancer-free with the support of the BC Cancer Foundation.

“Initially, we were terrified, especially with Hannah’s sister facing the same fight,” Jones stated. “But we found strength in our shared experiences and decided to channel our journey into something positive.” Their passion for cycling became a powerful outlet, leading them to join the Ride to Conquer Cancer, where they first discovered their love for biking as a way to combat cancer’s challenges.

With the ride set to begin shortly, the pair is preparing to tackle Iceland’s unpredictable weather and challenging terrain, with each day’s ride comparable to climbing Mount Seymour twice. “We are ready for strong winds and rain, but nothing can stop us from honoring those who have fought and continue to fight cancer,” they affirmed.

As their departure approaches, the community has rallied behind them, demonstrating the impact of resilience and the fight against cancer. The Westfjord Charity Ride not only highlights the pressing need for cancer research funding but also serves as a beacon of hope for survivors and families affected by this disease.

Stay tuned for updates on their journey and the total funds raised as they pedal through this challenging landscape, proving that resilience can indeed conquer any terrain.
