The Nova Scotia Cider Association has officially launched Canada’s first cider appellation, named “Red Sky.” This initiative aims to highlight the exceptional quality of apples cultivated in the province. According to Poet Comeau, owner of Lake City Cider and president of the Nova Scotia Cider Association, the appellation represents the unique agricultural heritage of Nova Scotia. In an interview with CTV, Comeau remarked, “I think it’s just about looking at what we have here in Nova Scotia and realizing that it’s something pretty special.”

Standards for Quality Assurance

To be recognized as a “Red Sky” cider, products must meet stringent quality standards. Comeau explained that the certification process includes quality control measures such as blind tastings. Producers must submit samples that undergo evaluation for various factors, including sugar and acid levels, as well as the requirement for a blend of different apple varieties rather than relying on a single type. Currently, there are nine qualifying ciders available throughout the province, with plans for them to be accessible at the NSLC by the end of August 2023.

The launch of the “Red Sky” appellation is significant not only for the local cider industry but also for reducing interprovincial trade barriers. As provinces adjust regulations surrounding the importation and exportation of alcoholic beverages, Comeau emphasizes the importance of supporting Canadian products. “I think that the best products that are made in Canada should be enjoyed by Canadians,” she stated.

Promoting Local Ciders

The unique growing conditions in Nova Scotia contribute to the distinctiveness of its ciders. Comeau noted that apples cannot thrive in every climate, making local products particularly special. “It does create opportunities and markets where maybe they don’t have cideries,” she explained.

To further promote the “Red Sky” brand, Comeau advocates for pairing the ciders with food in restaurant settings, enhancing the overall experience for consumers. This approach not only elevates the enjoyment of the beverages but also encourages a deeper appreciation for the local agricultural landscape.

The introduction of the “Red Sky” cider appellation marks a pivotal moment for the Nova Scotia cider industry, establishing a standard of quality that sets it apart on the national stage. With strong local support and a commitment to quality, the initiative aims to foster greater recognition of Nova Scotia’s cider offerings both within Canada and beyond.
