URGENT UPDATE: A gunman is dead following a shooting incident that left at least one New York Police Department (NYPD) officer and two civilians injured in Midtown Manhattan on Monday evening. The NYPD has confirmed that the shooter has been neutralized, and the scene is now secure.
Multiple law enforcement sources report the incident occurred near 345 Park Avenue, a high-rise corporate office building housing major firms including the National Football League and Blackstone. Eyewitnesses described a man armed with a long rifle entering the building just before shots were fired.
One civilian is currently in critical condition, while the other civilian and the NYPD officer, who was shot in the back, are both expected to survive, according to law enforcement officials. The officer is stationed at a Bronx precinct and was on duty near the building when the shooting began.
The NYPD bomb squad is on site to investigate further, and the FBI is providing support at the active crime scene, as confirmed by Deputy Director Dan Bongino on X.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced, “there is an active shooter investigation taking place in Midtown right now.” He urged residents to avoid the area around Park Avenue and East 51st Street and to take safety precautions.
Governor Kathy Hochul has also addressed the situation, confirming she has been briefed and advising people to steer clear of the vicinity.
Video footage shows a heavy police presence, with officers rushing into the building as emergency responders work to secure the scene. The NYPD has reported that the situation remains “very active.”
New York City’s emergency management system has issued warnings regarding potential traffic delays, road closures, and public transit disruptions in the area.
As the investigation unfolds, authorities are focused on gathering further details about the shooter and the circumstances leading up to this tragic event. More updates are expected as this developing story progresses.
