Island Students Forge Bonds with Seniors Through Meaningful Visits

Students from Maple Bay Elementary in Crofton, British Columbia, concluded their school year on June 22, 2023, by visiting residents at Deertrail Cottage, a local seniors’ residence. This visit marked the culmination of a unique program that fostered intergenerational connections through shared experiences and heartfelt interactions.
The initiative began in December when Gina Posey, a teacher for Grade 6/7, encouraged her students to write holiday cards to the residents. What started as a simple gesture quickly evolved into a series of visits that allowed students, aged 11 and 12, to engage deeply with the elderly residents, whose ages range from their 80s to a remarkable 102 years old.
During their final visit, the students brought potted flowers and vibrant planters to enhance the facility’s courtyard. As they worked alongside the residents, conversations flowed naturally, bridging the generational gap. Mia, one of the students, engaged with Laurie, a resident nearly ten times her age, discussing the colors of the flowers they were planting. This moment showcased not just teamwork but a genuine connection between the two generations.
Reflecting on the emotional weight of the day, Posey expressed her mixed feelings about the conclusion of the program. “Oh, you’re going to make me cry! It has been better than I could have ever anticipated,” she said. She observed that her students had come to view the residents as grandparents, forging bonds that transcended age.
Each student wrote personal letters for the final visit, with Ethan sharing memories of a turtle memory game that delighted both him and the seniors. “I said that I liked playing the turtle flipping game,” he noted. When questioned about who usually wins, he smiled and replied, “Both.”
As the visit drew to a close, Athena, another Grade 6 student, struggled with her emotions. “Saying goodbye to all of them,” she said, wiping away tears. She had formed a particularly close bond with resident Helen, whom she described as someone with whom she simply connected. “It’s just nice to see Helen once in a while,” she added.
Posey highlighted the importance of these interactions, not only for her students but for herself as well. “I leave with goosebumps after watching them interact,” she said. The experience has served as a powerful counter to the generational disconnect often observed in society, emphasizing respect and affection between young and old.
“We talk about respecting your elders, but they’re putting it into place,” Posey remarked. The students are not only practicing empathy but also nurturing relationships that many seniors find fulfilling. Resident Owen, a former teacher, expressed his enthusiasm for the visits, stating that they are “interesting” and provide a valuable opportunity to connect with young people.
Ethan noted the significance of their presence at Deertrail Cottage. “One of them said that they were lonely here,” he revealed, demonstrating an understanding of the emotional landscape of the residents. His insights reflect the awareness that the students have developed about aging and isolation.
As Ethan prepares to transition to Grade 8 at a new school, he expressed sadness about leaving behind his senior friends but remained optimistic about the future. “I feel good. I’m excited,” he said.
Posey hopes to continue this initiative next year, possibly with a new class that might benefit even more from the experience. “It won’t be the same class,” she acknowledged, “but maybe it’ll be a class that needs it even more than this one.”
While many students end their school year with traditional celebrations, Posey’s class departed with lasting memories, deep emotional connections, and a renewed understanding of the importance of community across generations.
