Brigade Days at Fort Langley: Step Back in History THIS Weekend!

UPDATE: The highly anticipated Brigade Days at the Fort Langley National Historic Site kicks off this weekend, running from Saturday, August 3 to Monday, August 5, 2023. Visitors are urged to arrive early to fully immerse themselves in this captivating historical event.

Event organizer Amandeep Johal emphasizes the overwhelming positive feedback from past attendees, noting that many guests return year after year. “This is the best time of year to see Fort Langley shine and understand why our site is crucial to Canada’s story,” Johal stated. Guests can expect to engage with costumed reenactors and experience the vibrant atmosphere of the fur trade era.

Brigade Days coincides with the B.C. Day long weekend, making it one of the few community events that celebrate the province’s creation. Attendees will embark on an immersive journey into 19th-century life, exploring canvas tent encampments, historical demonstrations, and engaging storytelling. However, this year there will be no flotilla as seen in previous events.

Admission is free for all with the Canada Strong Pass, promoting accessibility for families and history enthusiasts alike. Throughout the weekend, visitors can participate in various activities and games, including the thrilling Fort Feats of Strength relay race on Sunday at 3 p.m.. Teams of eight will compete in a series of challenging obstacles for a chance to have their names engraved on the prestigious Voyageur Cup.

Sunday also features the highly anticipated Fur Trade Fashion Show at 1 p.m., where staff and volunteers will showcase the intricate fashions of the fur trade era while answering questions from the public. Additionally, black powder demonstrations are scheduled for 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. each day, providing visitors with a unique glimpse into historical weaponry.

The event will highlight traditional heritage skills such as blacksmithing, trapping, and weaving, with valuable contributions from Métis knowledge keepers who will share cultural insights and host games on Saturday.

Johal attributes the success of Brigade Days to the dedication of volunteers, who make up over 90 percent of the encampment. “They invest countless hours to ensure this event is a resounding success,” he said. Following the public events, a special gathering known as the Chief Trader’s Dinner will be held on Saturday evening to honor these volunteers for their hard work throughout the year.

The kitchen behind the Big House will be a hive of activity, preparing a feast that includes a pig, a lamb, and chickens, showcasing the community spirit that defines Brigade Days.
