UPDATE: The Toronto Blue Jays have made a significant move just ahead of the Major League Baseball trade deadline, acquiring Seranthony Dominguez from the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for pitching prospect Juaron Watts-Brown. The 30-year-old right-hander is expected to bolster a struggling bullpen, adding vital power as the team pushes for playoff contention.

Dominguez made an immediate impact, pitching a scoreless seventh inning for the Blue Jays during a tight 3-2 loss to the Orioles on Tuesday night. With a fastball that averages an impressive 97.7 miles per hour, he brings the type of firepower that contending clubs desperately need as they head into the final stretch of the season.

Born on November 25, 1994, in Esperanza, Dominican Republic, Dominguez comes from a humble background as the oldest of six children. He worked various jobs, including at a car wash and a chicken farm, to support his family, who were dairy farmers. His parents named him Seranthony after hearing the name on a television show, and he has a brother named Chrisanthony.

As a child, Dominguez lived near a local baseball field where he dedicated countless hours to practice. His passion for the game was fueled by watching legendary pitcher Pedro Martinez on television, inspiring him to hone his skills and strive for greatness.

However, Dominguez faced significant challenges early in his career. After injuring his elbow in June 2019, he underwent Tommy John surgery in 2020, ultimately missing three seasons. His recovery was delayed by COVID-19 travel restrictions, but he made a triumphant return to the Philadelphia Phillies late in the 2021 season.

Now, as a pending free agent, Dominguez joins the Blue Jays as a likely rental for the remainder of the season. Currently earning US$8 million, he will be eligible for free agency at the end of the 2025 season. He posted a solid 3.24 earned-run average in 43 appearances for the Orioles, with 54 strikeouts and 24 walks over 41.2 innings.

This acquisition marks a pivotal moment for the Blue Jays as they seek to strengthen their bullpen and enhance their chances in the playoff race. Fans are eagerly watching to see how Dominguez will contribute moving forward in the season.
