Rookie Trey Vaval’s 2 TDs Lift Blue Bombers Over Argonauts 40-31
UPDATE: Rookie Trey Vaval electrified the crowd at Princess Auto Stadium with two stunning touchdown returns, leading the Winnipeg Blue Bombers to a crucial 40-31 victory over the Toronto Argonauts on August 4, 2023. This victory snapped Winnipeg’s three-game losing streak and was a defining moment for the team.
In front of a sell-out crowd, Vaval returned a kickoff for 93 yards and followed it up with a 97-yard punt return, marking the first touchdowns of the season for the rookie defensive back from Montana. The win was critical for the Bombers, improving their record to 4-3 as they battle for playoff positioning.
With starting quarterback Zach Collaros sidelined due to a neck injury, backup Chris Streveler stepped up, completing 17 of 21 passes for 173 yards but struggled with three interceptions. He also added a rushing touchdown, showcasing his versatility and determination on the field.
The game got underway despite concerns over air quality due to forest fires in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. The Air Quality Health Index was recorded at 7 at kickoff, safely below the threshold that could have delayed the game.
Toronto’s quarterback Nick Arbuckle threw for 327 yards with two touchdowns and one interception, but the Argonauts, now 2-6, could not overcome the explosive performance from the Bombers. Argonauts’ receiver Damonte Coxie impressed with two touchdown catches, bringing in nine passes for 187 yards.
The Bombers led 14-7 after the first quarter and expanded their lead to 31-13 at halftime. Defensive end Jay Person brought the crowd to its feet with a 28-yard fumble return for a touchdown, adding to Winnipeg’s momentum.
Winnipeg’s kicker Sergio Castillo contributed with field goals of 46, 49, 34, and 31 yards, despite a missed 45-yard attempt that had fans holding their breath.
After halftime, the Argonauts mounted a comeback, scoring swiftly with Coxie’s 16-yard touchdown catch and a field goal from Lirim Hajrullahu. However, the Bombers kept their composure, as Castillo nailed a field goal in the fourth quarter, ensuring the lead was secure.
With just under three minutes left, a crucial interception by linebacker Tony Jones set up a strong defensive stand for Winnipeg, allowing them to maintain their lead as the clock wound down.
Both teams face upcoming challenges as the Argonauts will host the Ottawa Redblacks on August 9, while the Blue Bombers will visit the Calgary Stampeders on the same day.
This thrilling game not only showcased rookie talent but also highlighted the resilience of the Bombers as they fight to remain competitive in the CFL this season. Fans are buzzing with excitement, eager to see how the team builds on this victory.
