UPDATE: In a shocking turn of events, authorities have charged two individuals in connection with the tragic death of an infant in Burpee Township, Manitoulin Island. The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) confirmed that a 40-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman, both residents of Burpee Township, were arrested on Thursday, May 25, 2025, nearly 10 months after the infant’s death.

On October 1, 2024, just before 9 a.m., OPP and Sudbury-Manitoulin Paramedic Services responded to emergency calls reporting an unresponsive infant at a local residence. Paramedics rushed the child to a nearby hospital, where the infant was sadly pronounced deceased. Initially treated as a medical emergency, the case took a grim turn as forensic testing prompted the OPP’s criminal investigation branch to take over the case in May 2025.

Both suspects have been charged with second-degree murder. Authorities have not disclosed further details surrounding the circumstances of the infant’s death, intensifying the community’s concern and grief. The investigation is ongoing, and police are collaborating with the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service.

In a bid for justice, OPP officials are urging anyone with information to come forward. Community members are encouraged to contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or reach out to Crime Stoppers anonymously.

The accused remain in custody and are scheduled to appear in a Greater Sudbury court on August 14, 2025. This case has resonated deeply within the community, highlighting the urgent need for answers and accountability in this heartbreaking incident.
