UPDATE: Thousands of Vancouverites are pouring into Oppenheimer Park as the 49th annual Powell Street Festival kicks off today, August 12, 2023. This vibrant celebration of Japanese-Canadian culture is set to draw more than 23,000 attendees over its two-day run.

The festival, a cornerstone of the community since its inception nearly half a century ago, honors the rich history and contributions of Japanese-Canadians, particularly in the area around Powell Street, known as Paueru Gai. This neighborhood was once home to a thriving Japanese-Canadian population, which peaked at around 10,000 before the forced removal and internment during World War II.

Today’s festivities are filled with energy, featuring dynamic taiko drumming, captivating martial arts demonstrations, and a diverse range of musical performances. Food and craft vendors are set up throughout the park, offering a taste of traditional Japanese cuisine and handcrafted goods to festival-goers.

The Powell Street Festival serves not just as a celebration, but as a reminder of the resilience and enduring spirit of the Japanese-Canadian community. “This festival is a vital part of our identity,” said festival organizer, Akiko Tanaka. “It’s about celebrating our culture and remembering our past.”

The event runs from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. today and will continue tomorrow, August 13, with even more activities planned. As visitors flock to Oppenheimer Park, the atmosphere is electric, making this an unmissable experience for anyone in the area.
