The Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) team, the Sea Bears, has appointed Nick Elam as their target time score strategist, aiming to enhance their performance in late-game situations. This decision, officially announced on May 5, 2023, marks a significant step for the team as they look to leverage Elam’s expertise in the unique scoring format he created, known as the Elam Ending.

Elam, who has extensively studied basketball dynamics under this innovative format, expressed his anticipation for being called upon by a professional team. “I knew that one day I would be called upon by a team to help them win games, based on the knowledge and the research I have done,” he told the Winnipeg Sun. His insights are expected to provide the Sea Bears with a strategic edge during critical moments of their games.

Team general manager Mike Taylor underscored the rationale behind this hiring, stating, “If anyone knows the strengths and weaknesses of target time, the best styles of play and the best coaching points, he is the guy.” By hiring Elam, the Sea Bears aim to improve their approach to late-game scenarios, which have proven challenging in their recent matches.

The Elam Ending format, first implemented by the CEBL in 2020, modifies traditional basketball timing rules. When a game reaches the final four minutes of the fourth quarter, the game clock stops. A target score is then established by adding nine points to the leading team’s score, with the first team to reach or surpass that target declared the winner. This format aims to reduce fouling and stalling, shifting the focus entirely to scoring.

Elam’s role extends beyond merely understanding the rules; he is closely analyzing trends, player behaviors, and team tendencies during these crucial moments. Taylor noted that Elam’s evaluations are already influencing the Sea Bears’ strategies, enhancing their performance significantly. “He has helped us improve our philosophy in those situations,” Taylor remarked, although he refrained from divulging specific strategies to maintain a competitive advantage.

As of now, the Sea Bears have recorded a mixed performance, holding a record of 4-6 in their last ten games. Notably, they have been successful in all four matches where they entered target time with a lead, but their performance has faltered when trailing, with a record of 0-6 under those circumstances. This inconsistency highlights the importance of Elam’s insights into the team’s strategy during high-pressure situations.

Elam’s observations extend to the broader landscape of the league, where he has identified varying responses from players to the target time format. He cited Xavier Moon, a former standout in the CEBL, as an example of a player who thrived under these conditions. “Moon felt at home and comfortable when the clock was shut off,” Elam explained. In contrast, he noted that many players struggle to make optimal decisions during target time, which can impact their teams’ outcomes.

In addition to his role with the Sea Bears, Elam serves as an assistant professor at Ball State University, where he continues to explore the implications of the Elam Ending in both academic and practical contexts. He views the dynamics of target time as a fascinating area of study, particularly in understanding which players excel and which falter when the game shifts from a traditional clock-based format to a score-based system.

As the Sea Bears look to capitalize on Elam’s expertise, the team remains focused on refining their strategies and improving their performance in upcoming matches. Taylor’s confidence in Elam’s contributions suggests that the Sea Bears are committed to making the most of this innovative approach to basketball, aiming for greater success in their pursuit of victory.
