Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation Issues Urgent Second Evacuation Order
UPDATE: The Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation has just issued a full evacuation order, marking the second such directive in two months due to escalating wildfires threatening air quality and access routes. This urgent decision comes in the wake of several wildfires burning dangerously close to the community, prompting immediate action for the safety of its residents.
As of August 4, 2025, approximately 2,000 residents are preparing to evacuate, with many expected to seek refuge at the RBC Convention Centre in Winnipeg. The evacuation order follows a precautionary measure initiated on Saturday for high-priority members, indicating the seriousness of the situation.
Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation Chief Angela Levasseur took to social media to assure community members of the ongoing efforts by the Chief and council, along with the Emergency Management Team (EMT) and Emergency Measures Organization (EMO). “We are working around the clock to ensure a safe and smooth evacuation for every citizen of our nation,” Levasseur stated.
In her post, she emphasized the commitment to suppress the wildfires that jeopardize their ancestral lands. “We are also doing everything in our power to make sure every possible measure is taken to suppress the wildfires that threaten our beloved ancestral lands,” she added.
The urgency of this situation cannot be understated as air quality continues to deteriorate, impacting the health and safety of the community. Residents are being urged to comply with the evacuation order to ensure their well-being.
Authorities confirm that logistical support is being mobilized to facilitate the evacuation process. Community officials are coordinating with local agencies to provide necessary resources and support for evacuees.
As this developing situation unfolds, the Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation is focused on ensuring that all residents are accounted for and safely relocated. The community is encouraged to stay informed through official channels as updates will be provided regularly.
The situation remains fluid and residents are advised to prepare for potential disruptions as the wildfires continue to pose a significant risk.
