KSB GIW Pumps Enhance Reliability at BHP’s Olympic Dam

BHP’s Olympic Dam has successfully reduced equipment downtime by implementing KSB’s GIW MDX450 mill-duty slurry pumps. Previously, a historically installed pump failed after only 1,600 to 1,800 hours of operation, resulting in costly unplanned maintenance shutdowns. With Olympic Dam recognized as one of the world’s largest deposits of copper, gold, and uranium, improving operational reliability was critical to maintaining productivity at this vital site.
Located 560 kilometers north of Adelaide in South Australia, Olympic Dam is a significant component of BHP’s Minerals Australia operation, encompassing both underground and surface mining activities. The site’s integrated processing facility plays a crucial role in converting ore into metal products. The traditional Indigenous custodians of the land include the Kokatha, Dieri, and Arabana peoples, reflecting the site’s deep cultural significance.
In response to the challenges posed by the failing pump, BHP sought a solution that would enhance reliability and cost-effectiveness. As part of this initiative, the company invited KSB Australia to conduct a performance-based trial of their cyclone feed pump. KSB Australia assessed the existing installation, slurry requirements, and overall performance needs.
After evaluating the situation, KSB Australia proposed the adoption of the GIW MDX450 mill-duty slurry pump, a decision reached following a strategic overhaul led by a new team. In 2024, BHP and KSB formalized their partnership, with BHP selecting KSB for a standby position to operate two GIW MDX450 pumps on the Svedala Mill circuit.
The implementation of these pumps is set to significantly enhance operational efficiency. BHP anticipates reducing the number of annual maintenance cycles from five to just two, representing a major improvement in maintenance planning and resource management. This shift not only minimizes downtime but also allows BHP to harness KSB’s technological innovations for more efficient operations.
The collaboration between BHP and KSB highlights a commitment to improving performance through data-driven insights and streamlined procedures. As this partnership develops further, both companies aim to ensure that operational reliability and efficiency remain at the forefront of their mining activities.
