Sault Ste. Marie to Host Gripping Production of Macbeth

William Shakespeare’s iconic play, Macbeth, will debut on stage in Sault Ste. Marie from August 27 to 31, 2024. Directed by Calvin Lane of Unfathomable Horrors Productions, this rendition promises to be a faithful adaptation, emphasizing the play’s darker themes and intense emotional depth.
Lane describes his interpretation as more “grim and dark” than recent adaptations, focusing on the play’s exploration of ambition, guilt, and the supernatural. He noted, “Macbeth is a very interesting piece of literature; it’s also one of his most haunting works. Dealing in the occult and witches, the natural attraction was just there.” The director believes the profound themes will resonate powerfully with the audience.
The production held auditions in May and Lane expressed enthusiasm about the cast, stating that it is among the best he has ever worked with. “Everyone works with each other and bounces ideas off each other. There’s no conflict on set; everyone’s smiling even though we’re dealing with blood and violence, it’s a nice place to be,” he added.
Impressive Cast of Talented Actors
The cast includes a diverse range of talents bringing Shakespeare’s characters to life. Nathan Darlow will portray Macbeth, the Thane of Cawdor who descends into madness. Rebekah Moran takes on the role of Lady Macbeth, the ambitious and manipulative force behind her husband’s ascent. Other key performances include C.J. Morton as Banquo, Killian Rogers as Fleance, and Nathan Belanger as King Duncan.
Supporting roles are filled by Joel Aikens as Malcolm, and William Ambeault as Donalbain, among others. The production will also feature the haunting presence of the three witches, known as the Weïrd sisters, played by Heather Janser, Grace King, and Luci Siklosi. Their eerie influence is expected to add a captivating layer to the performance.
Lane indicated that this production is just the beginning for theatre in Sault Ste. Marie. “This is just the beginning; we’re going to be doing more in the future. Macbeth was just an amazing starting-off point,” he stated, hinting at plans for future performances that aim to enrich the local cultural landscape.
With its powerful themes and dynamic cast, this production of Macbeth is set to be a significant event for the community, promising an engaging experience for both theatre enthusiasts and newcomers alike. The Sault Theater Workshop will serve as the backdrop for this dramatic exploration of ambition and moral decay, inviting audiences to witness Shakespeare’s timeless tragedy in a fresh, compelling manner.
