Edmonton Craft Breweries Unite for Shannon Gray’s Cancer Fight

In a show of solidarity, all ten craft breweries along Happy Beer Street in Edmonton hosted a fundraising event called Shann-A-Palooza on Sunday, March 3, 2024. The initiative aims to support Shannon Gray, a beloved member of the brewing community, who is currently battling a rare and aggressive form of Stage 3 breast cancer known as triple negative invasive pleomorphic lobular carcinoma.
Gray’s diagnosis came after she experienced pain during a run with friends in April 2023. Following her diagnosis in May, she began treatment in February 2024, which is expected to last until late 2026. Her treatment plan includes six months of chemotherapy, surgery involving a possible mastectomy and lymph node removal, followed by an extensive recovery period and additional radiation and chemotherapy treatments.
Community Support and Fundraising Efforts
The Shann-A-Palooza event not only serves as a means to raise funds but also as a testament to the strong sense of community within Edmonton’s craft brewing scene. Ben Rix, co-owner of Bent Stick Brewing, expressed that organizing the event was a “no-brainer,” reflecting the collective desire to support Gray during this challenging time.
While a GoFundMe campaign has been initiated to cover Gray’s living expenses during her treatment, including rent, groceries, and prescriptions, the brewing community’s efforts extend beyond online fundraising. Gray’s private health insurance does not provide long-term disability benefits, leaving her without financial assistance during her recovery. This situation has prompted local breweries to come together, selling pints to directly benefit her.
Gray, who has been the taproom manager for Ale Architect since it opened two years ago, has faced significant challenges due to her treatment. “I’m immunocompromised now, and I will just continue to be in a worse state,” she shared, noting that the effects of chemotherapy have made it increasingly difficult for her to perform her job effectively. Her oncology team has advised her to take a leave of absence until after her surgery.
Personal Reflections on Community and Support
As Gray navigates the complexities of her treatment, she remains focused on taking things one day at a time. The overwhelming support from her community has been a source of comfort. “I feel cherished and cared for and supported. It’s really wonderful because at the same time I kind of feel like I’m on an island,” she stated, reflecting on the emotional impact of the ongoing support she receives.
With several treatments ahead, Gray’s journey is just beginning. The outpouring of support from her fellow brewers and the community at large highlights the profound bonds formed within the industry. Each pint sold at the Shann-A-Palooza not only raises funds but also reinforces the message that together, they can face even the toughest challenges.
