Urgent: Police Investigate Antisemitic Vandalism at B.C. Synagogue

UPDATE: Authorities are investigating a disturbing act of antisemitic vandalism at the Congregation Emanu-El synagogue in downtown Victoria, British Columbia. The Victoria Police Department responded to reports of offensive graffiti on Saturday, August 2, 2025, at approximately 8 p.m., and are currently gathering evidence.
This incident has sparked outrage within the community. The Jewish Federation of Greater Vancouver condemned the act, stating on social media, “Acts of antisemitism like this are not just attacks on Jewish institutions—they are attacks on the safety, dignity, and values of our entire community.” A photo of the vandalism was shared, further amplifying the call for solidarity against hate.
Both Premier David Eby and Nina Krieger, the Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General, expressed their unequivocal support for the Jewish community. Premier Eby emphasized on social media: “Antisemitism has no place in our communities – not now, not ever.” Minister Krieger reiterated this sentiment, highlighting that hate-related crimes will be treated with the utmost seriousness. “This is why we are expanding the Hate Crimes Unit for B.C.,” she stated, underlining the province’s commitment to combating hate.
As the investigation unfolds, VicPD has confirmed they are unable to release further details at this time, but they are actively engaged in addressing the situation. The community response has been swift, with residents expressing their shock and condemnation of the incident.
This incident highlights a growing concern over hate crimes in Canada, as officials work to ensure the safety and dignity of all communities. As reactions continue to pour in, community leaders are urging individuals to stand united against such acts of hatred.
