Urgent: Stabbing Incident on Toronto Streetcar Leads to Arrests
UPDATE: Two individuals have been arrested and charged following a shocking assault and stabbing incident that occurred on a Toronto streetcar earlier today. The incident took place in the East Toronto Chinatown neighborhood, near Broadview Avenue and Gerrard Street East, at approximately 1:30 p.m.
Authorities confirm that the confrontation involved a 31-year-old woman and a male suspect, both unknown to each other, while aboard a TTC streetcar traveling southbound from Broadview Station. Their physical altercation escalated quickly, resulting in the suspect allegedly stabbing the victim.
After the attack, the victim exited the streetcar seeking help and was later found nearby in Leslieville, close to Queen Street East and Munro Street. Paramedics transported her to a local trauma center with serious, yet non-life-threatening injuries.
The suspect fled the scene before police arrived but was identified and apprehended during the investigation. Gullu Jiwani, aged 72, is now facing charges of assault with a weapon and aggravated assault. He is scheduled to appear in bail court later today.
In a surprising twist, police also revealed that the victim, Sabrina Young, aged 31 and with no fixed address, was wanted for two separate assaults at Broadview Subway Station earlier on the same day. She has now been charged with two counts of assault, disobeying a lawful order of court, and assault with a weapon or imitation weapon. Young is also set to appear in bail court today.
This ongoing investigation has raised significant concerns among local residents regarding safety on public transit. Toronto Police urge anyone with additional information about the incident to contact them at 416-808-5500 or to reach out to Crime Stoppers anonymously.
As details continue to emerge, this case highlights the urgent need for community vigilance and support for victims of violence. Stay tuned for further updates as authorities work to resolve this alarming incident.
