Police Issue Nearly 800 Tickets During Shambhala Music Festival

URGENT UPDATE: Police have issued nearly 800 tickets for speeding and impaired driving in a major enforcement operation surrounding the Shambhala Music Festival held from July 25 to 28, 2023, in Salmo, British Columbia. Authorities report that this crackdown, conducted by the BC Highway Patrol and Nelson Police, was essential for ensuring the safety of festival-goers traveling to and from the event.
Over the course of the four-day festival, law enforcement focused on identifying unsafe vehicles and impaired drivers, resulting in more than 80 tickets issued for driving under the influence of drugs. The operation was prompted by the influx of approximately 20,000 electronic dance music enthusiasts flocking to the area, raising concerns about road safety.
Cpl. Michael McLaughlin emphasized the urgency of this enforcement, stating, “It is clear this enforcement was necessary.” Officers faced challenging conditions with high temperatures while working long hours in full uniform. Their vigilance paid off, with authorities reporting that 60 vehicles were towed due to either mechanical safety issues or driver impairment.
