Free Kids Art Camp Launches in Saskatoon—Creativity Unleashed!

URGENT UPDATE: A free art camp for children has officially launched in downtown Saskatoon, offering an exciting opportunity for creativity and play throughout August 2023. On the first day, 20 children participated, including seven-year-old Francisco, who proudly showcased his painted wooden hook inspired by Maui from Moana.
“This is a Maui hook!” Francisco exclaimed, highlighting the joy and imagination that art can inspire. The camp, led by artists Derek Sandbeck and Andie Palynchuk, emphasizes exploration and unstructured play in the creative process. “Our practice is focused on play. We want the kids to play and explore art in a pretty unstructured way,” Sandbeck stated.
The initiative aims to break down financial barriers to artistic expression. “Because there are families that can’t afford camps in the summer, this is a free camp—your kids get lunch, and everything’s provided,” Sandbeck explained. Inspired by Winnipeg’s Art City Inc., the camp is designed to ensure that creativity is accessible to all.
The first week features a collaborative mural project, while children will also engage in sculpting, stamping, weaving, and even raft-building throughout the month. With a daily cap of 20 kids, half of the spots are reserved for drop-ins, ensuring that as many children as possible can benefit from this enriching experience.
As the camp unfolds, the impact on the children and the community is clear. The focus on creativity not only nurtures artistic skills but also boosts confidence and imagination. Parents and guardians are encouraged to take advantage of this unique opportunity for their children to engage with art in a supportive environment.
Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting program as it continues to unfold in Saskatoon. The art camp is not just a chance for kids to create—it’s a vital resource for families looking for free summer activities. Don’t miss out on the chance to inspire the next generation of artists!
