Illustrator Gus Morais Unveils Passion Project on Taylor Swift

Illustrator Gus Morais is set to release his new book, “Taylor Swift: Unofficial Search and Find Biographies,” which blends his artistic talent with extensive research on the renowned singer-songwriter. Morais was approached by Cider Mill Press, a subsidiary of HarperCollins, in early 2024 to create an engaging search-and-find book, an opportunity he eagerly accepted.
The collaboration began with a meeting between Morais and John Whalen, the publisher. The concept of a visual biography focusing on Taylor Swift inspired Morais, who found the project a perfect match for his dual passions of drawing and research. “Just by reading that title, I was already excited about the possibility of creating a book that could blend my two passions,” Morais shared.
Illustration and Empathy in the Digital Age
In his creative process, Morais views illustration as an empathy tool, fostering connections through impactful visuals. “Making people feel something – whether it’s a laugh, a memory, or even something emotional – makes me happy,” he explained. His work reflects a universal human experience, bridging differences through relatable art.
Navigating the challenges of the digital age, Morais utilizes advanced tools such as the iPad Pro and Apple Pencil for his illustrations. He has over 15 years of experience in digital art, relying on software like Photoshop and Procreate to enhance his creative processes. Despite the advantages of technology, he emphasizes the importance of balancing social media engagement with the need for solitude during creative work.
“Many of the opportunities I’ve had came from building a good online presence through my digital portfolio and self-promotion,” he noted.
Researching Taylor Swift’s Artistic Journey
Morais dedicates significant time to research before starting any drawing. For “Taylor Swift: Unofficial Search and Find Biographies,” he explored various sources, including fan websites and official videos, to gather insights about Swift’s life and music. He even utilized Google Street View to accurately represent the architecture of cities significant to Swift’s journey.
The book aims to capture the essence of Swift’s career, with illustrations that reflect her key life moments and artistic milestones. “I studied every album, listened to the songs many times, and read all the lyrics,” Morais explained. His commitment to authenticity ensures that fans will find visual references to every lyric from Swift’s discography.
Looking ahead, Morais plans to expand his portfolio with more creative projects. He is already working on another book titled “Search and Find Kids: Halloween,” which incorporates his unique spin on classic Halloween themes.
Morais encourages emerging illustrators to persist in their craft, emphasizing the importance of staying informed about both art and new technologies. He reflects on his own journey, noting that fears about artistic style and business acumen are common among young artists. “Keep drawing, even if you’re afraid, and stay informed and open-minded,” he advises.
For Morais, success is defined by the ability to pursue his passion while maintaining meaningful relationships. “If I’m able to have that, I know the illustrations I make will turn out fun, rich, inspiring, and capable of touching the reader’s heart,” he said.
“Taylor Swift: Unofficial Search and Find Biographies” is available for pre-order, and Morais hopes that readers will find joy and connection within its pages. His dedication to honoring Swift’s artistic journey shines through in every detail of the book, making it a must-have for fans of all ages.
