Ottawa Braces for Rain Today Before Heatwave Hits 30°C

UPDATE: Ottawa is set to experience its first rain in two weeks today, with a 60 per cent chance of afternoon showers before temperatures soar above 30°C for the next five days. Environment Canada has issued a forecast indicating a mix of sun and clouds alongside a potential thunderstorm, making the day feel as hot as 36°C due to humidity.
Rain is expected this afternoon, with high temperatures reaching 29°C. The evening may bring a 40 per cent chance of additional showers, though skies are predicted to clear later tonight, dropping to a low of 16°C.
Starting tomorrow, temperatures will climb to a high of 30°C, with the humidex making it feel like 35°C. Friday’s forecast also warns of potential smoke from nearby wildfires, impacting air quality.
The weekend will see continued heat, with Saturday projected to reach 31°C and both Sunday and Monday expected to maintain highs of 32°C. Normal temperatures for this time of year average 26°C during the day and 15°C at night.
Environment Canada senior climatologist David Phillips remarked, “It’s good news; for the first time in maybe two weeks, we’re going to see a drop of rain in the Ottawa area but it’s not the savior rain.” He emphasized the ongoing drought conditions, stating that the region has been experiencing prolonged spells of heat throughout the summer.
The last recorded rain in Ottawa was a trace on July 27, following 8.4 mm of rainfall on July 24. With no rain expected over the weekend, residents are advised to prepare for continued dry conditions.
Stay tuned for updates as weather conditions develop throughout the day.
