URGENT UPDATE: A wildfire in the Miramichi area of New Brunswick has surged to approximately 25 hectares, prompting immediate action from local firefighting crews. The blaze ignited near Oldfield Road and Route 8 around 3 p.m. on Wednesday, and firefighting efforts are ongoing as of Thursday morning.

More than 30 firefighters, alongside eight air tankers and three bulldozers, are actively battling the flames. The response team includes the Miramichi Fire Department, conservation officers, the Department of Protective Services, the RCMP, NB Power, and the Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

As of 10 p.m. Wednesday, Miramichi Fire Chief Stephen Melanson reported that the fire remained out of control and had expanded to about 35 hectares. Fortunately, while the fire did impact a hydro line, officials confirmed there was no damage to critical infrastructure. A precautionary engine was stationed at a nearby residence until it was deemed safe for the property owner.

Despite the escalating size of the fire, authorities have stated that there is currently no threat to any properties in the surrounding area. The Department of Natural Resources announced that the dozer guard is nearing completion, and the size of the fire has now been revised to between 20 to 25 hectares.

Residents and local officials are advised to stay alert as firefighting efforts continue to contain the flames. The situation is developing, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
