Wheatley Library Reopens Saturday After Gas Leak Scare

UPDATE: The Wheatley Library in Chatham-Kent is set to reopen on Saturday, July 15, 2023, following a significant gas leak scare that prompted its closure earlier this month. The branch, located at 35 Talbot St. West, has been closed since early July due to safety concerns after a strong odor was detected near the site.
Authorities confirmed that the closure was a precautionary measure after a hydrogen sulphide gas leak was reported behind the library at the end of June. While the gas was never detected inside the library itself, officials acted swiftly to ensure the safety of staff and the public, given the library’s proximity to a newly discovered well.
As of now, the branch will resume regular operating hours and continue its popular summer reading programs. However, Chatham-Kent officials announced that active monitoring of the well will remain in place for at least the next two weeks. Consequently, parking behind the library will be restricted during this monitoring period to ensure community safety.
The hydrogen sulphide gas poses serious risks, having been linked to a devastating explosion in August 2021, which resulted in the destruction of two buildings and injuries to multiple individuals. Community members are urged to remain vigilant as the situation develops.
Residents can expect a return to normalcy as the Wheatley Library welcomes patrons back this weekend. The reopening signifies a positive step forward for the community, with anticipation growing for the continuation of library services and programming.
