Sault International Bridge Traffic Plummets 24% in July

URGENT UPDATE: Traffic volumes across the Sault Ste. Marie International Bridge have dramatically declined, with 91,967 vehicles crossing the bridge in July 2025. This represents a staggering 24% drop compared to the same month last year, highlighting a continued trend of reduced traffic across this vital link between Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario and Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.
Latest data from the bridge authority reveals that while July saw a slight improvement from June’s 26.7% decrease, the overall traffic remains significantly lower than previous years. The total vehicle crossings for the first seven months of 2025 stand at 469,651, down 23.1% from the same period in 2024.
Passenger vehicle traffic is particularly concerning, plummeting 27.2% in July alone. This category constitutes over 52% of all crossings, indicating a substantial impact on the local economy and travel habits. Even more alarming, traffic identified as commuters has decreased by 21.5%, while vehicles hauling trailers have seen a 20.9% drop.
Commercial truck traffic also mirrors this decline, falling by 24% in comparison to July 2024. These numbers reflect broader economic trends and challenges faced by both communities, emphasizing the need for urgent economic recovery strategies.
Since opening in 1962, the bridge has facilitated over 106.4 million vehicle crossings, and revenue from tolls is crucial for its maintenance and operational funding.
As we move further into the summer months, the ongoing decline in traffic raises questions about tourism and local commerce. Residents and officials alike are urging for measures to bolster travel and trade across the bridge, which serves as a lifeline for many.
What’s next? Stakeholders are closely monitoring patterns in traffic flow as they seek solutions to reverse this downward trend. Immediate community discussions are expected to address the implications of these figures and explore potential initiatives to enhance bridge usage.
